Alum Ravi Tandon (ECE Ph.D. 2010) has been appointed as the Litton Industries John M. Leonis Distinguished Associate Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Arizona, less than a year after earning tenure. At Maryland, Tandon was advised by Professor Sennur Ulukus (ECE/ISR).
The appointment is reserved for engineering faculty who “have a recognized commitment to excellence in teaching and have exhibited a potential for leadership,” the university said in a statement.
"In his short time here at UA, Ravi has demonstrated exemplary performance in research and teaching,” said Tamal Bose, ECE department head. “This is a very well-deserved recognition."
"I'm very honored to get this appointment," Tandon said. "Of course, it provides me with useful resources to continue my research, but I also plan to use it to support my students and their research."
Tandon’s research interests are in wireless networks, security and privacy, and machine learning.
In 2017, Tandon won an NSF CAREER Award for “Communication-Efficient Distributed Computation: Information-Theoretic Foundations and Algorithms.” He also won the 2018 Keysight Early Career Professor Award for his work in advanced information theory for wireless networks and cloud computing.
Immediately after graduation from the University of Maryland, Tandon worked for two years as a postdoctoral researcher with H. Vincent Poor at Princeton University. From there he worked as a research assistant professor at Virginia Tech. He joined the University of Arizona in 2015.
