Alumnus Ravi Tandon (EE Ph.D. 2010) has been promoted to associate professor with tenure by the University of Arizona. He has been an assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering there since 2015.

At Maryland, Tandon was advised by Professor Sennur Ulukus (ECE/ISR). He later completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Princeton University with Professor Vincent Poor, and held a research assistant professor position at Virginia Tech, before joining the University of Arizona.

"I tell my students to always have a vision when they try to think of a research agenda,” Tandon said. “Not all problems are impactful, and it's very important for students to have a sense of which problems are timely, which problems need to be solved right now, and which of them will have the most impact as of now."

Tandon received a National Science Foundation CAREER Award in 2017 to advance his research on information theory and coding. In 2018 he won Keysight Technologies, Inc.’s 2018 Keysight Early Career Professor Award for his work on wireless networks and cloud computing environments. His current research interests include information and coding theory, wireless communications, distributed cloud storage systems, machine learning, cyber-physical systems, and wireless security (cybersecurity) and privacy.
