ISR-affiliated Professor Steven Gabriel (ME) spent the bulk of his 2014-2015 sabbatical year focused on energy market equilibrium modeling with stays at the École Polytechnique, Montreal (January- middle of May 2015) and DIW, the Deutsches Institut für Wirtschaftsforschung (German Institute for Economic Research) in Berlin (end of May, June-July). He was funded by Institut de L’Énergie Trottier for his Montreal stay and by a Humboldt Fellowship from the German government for his visit to DIW, where he will be returning during 2015-2016 for a number of additional visits. In addition to conducting research on energy market models and in particular those with discrete restrictions common to equipment on/off, go-no go decisions in these markets, Professor Gabriel gave two energy-related keynotes. In his role as Professeur Invité Trottier at the Institut de L'Énergie Trottier, Montréal, gave a keynote on “Energy in Quebec and Canada” at the 2nd Annual Trottier Symposium on Sustainable Engineering, Energy and Design (March 30-31, 2015), and in addition was a key co-author of the accompanying white paper, “Energy in Quebec and Canada: A Conversation Starter.” In Berlin, Professor Gabriel gave the Humboldt Lecture at the 2015 Berlin Conference on Energy and Electricity Economics (BELEC), May 28-29, 2015 where he talked about energy security issues in “Energy Insecurity: From Cologne to “Cowboyistan.” Video of his talk is available here.
