Fischell Department of Bioengineering assistant professor Ian White (affiliate, Institute for Systems Research), has received the 2012 Best Paper Award from the journal Sensors. The winning article, "Aptamer Based Microsphere Biosensor for Thrombin Detection," was co-authored by Hongying Zhu, Jonathan D. Suter and Xudong Fan. Sensors is the leading international, peer-reviewed open access journal on the science and technology of sensors and biosensors.

The article describes the development of an optical microsphere resonator biosensor using an aptamer (an oligonucleic acid or peptide that binds to a target molecule) as a receptor for the measurement of the important biomolecule thrombin.

The publication's prize committee described the work as "a well-written paper reporting an interesting detection principle nicely coupled to the use of aptamers, a relatively new type of biological reagent."

Awarded annually, the Sensors Best Paper Award recognizes outstanding articles related to sensing technologies and applications that meet the aims, scope and high standards of the journal.
