UMIACS Director and ISR-affiliated Professor V.S. Subrahmanian (CS/UMIACS) has written a "Perspectives" article in the Sept. 14, 2007 issue of Science magazine, published by the American Association for the Advancement of Science. "Cultural Modeling in Real Time" explores the potential of cultural modeling software to predict the behavior of various political and terror movements around the world.

Subrahmanian is co-director of the Laboratory for Computational Cultural Dynamics, and has created the software OASYS, a system for online opinion analysis that automatically and quickly extracts relevant data from news reports on a topic and offers a probability estimate that a particular action might happen.
