Professor John Baras (ECE/ISR) has been elevated to the rank of Fellow in the International Federation for Automatic Control (IFAC).

The citation reads, ?For contributions to the theory and applications of stochastic systems and control and communication networks and for leadership in cross-disciplinary research and education.?

Baras will be honored along with other IFAC Fellows in the class of 2017 next July at the 20th IFAC World Congress in Toulouse, France.

Baras is the Lockheed Martin Chair in Systems Engineering for the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and the Institute for Systems Research. He is the founding director of ISR and holds 15 U.S. patents and a software copyright in Internet protocols, networks, wireless networks, security and signal processing. An internationally recognized authority in satellite and wireless networks, Baras led the development of fast Internet over satellite, commercialized by Hughes Network Systems, and created a new industry sector for Internet services over satellite.

Baras is also a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, 1984; the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Science, 2006; the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics, 2014; the American Association for the Advancement of Science, 2015; and the National Academy of Inventors, 2015.
