Alumnus Xiaobo Tan (EE Ph.D. 2002) has been promoted to the rank of full professor at Michigan State University. At Maryland, Tan was advised by Professor John Baras (ECE/ISR) and Professor P. S. Krishnaprasad (ECE/ISR).

At Michigan State, Tan?s research interests are in electroactive polymer sensors and actuators, biomimetic robotic fish, mobile sensing in aquatic environments, control of autonomous robotic swarms, modeling and control of hysteresis, embedded control systems.

Tan is currently working with Associate Professor Derek Paley (AE/ISR) and colleagues from other academic institutions on bio-inspired flow sensing and control for autonomous underwater vehicles. The goal is to create an autonomous underwater vehicle that can find stationary objects by changes in water flow, and can also work in groups.
