Research conducted by Assistant Professor Alireza Khaligh (ECE/ISR) has been selected as a Highlight on NSF's Science, Engineering and Education Innovation website.
"Charging Toward Next-Generation Electric Vehicles" details the outcome of Khaligh's 2011 NSF GOALI grant, "Novel Integration of AC/DC Charger and DC/DC Converter for Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles."
The highlight explains how Khaligh's research improves on current battery chargers. He created an integrated charger with fewer components, higher efficiency power transmission and higher power, all important features for connecting electric cars with future electric grids. The integrated charger will help make the next generation electric vehicles possible and assist in reducing greenhouse gases and harmful particulates, as well as the nation's dependency on oil. Its charging capability enables operation with a wide range of charging voltages including 120/220/240 VAC.
