Alumnus Ion Matei (2010 Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering) has just begun a postdoctoral fellowship with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in Gaithersburg, Md. He is working in the newly created System Engineering group in NIST's Engineering Laboratory, focusing on applying model-based systems engineering techniques in manufacturing.

Matei's postdoctoral fellowship is funded through the NIST American Recovery and Reinvestment Act Measurement Science and Engineering Fellowship Program (NIST ARRA Fellowship Program). The program is managed by the University of Maryland's Daniel Lathrop, director of the Institute for Research in Electronics and Applied Physics; and Robert Briber, chair of the Materials Science and Engineering Department.

The nationwide program is highly competitive and provides fellowship opportunities for researchers in measurement science and engineering at undergraduate, graduate and postdoctoral levels.

At Maryland, Matei was advised by Professor John Baras (ECE/ISR).
