Assistant Professor Miao Yu (ME) is the recipient of a Ralph E. Powe Junior Faculty Enhancement Award.

The awards provide seed money for research by junior faculty at schools that are a part of the Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) consortium. They are intended for full-time assistant professors within the first two years of their initial tenure track appointment and are meant to enrich the research and professional growth of young faculty, resulting in new funding opportunities. The awards are $5000 each and must be matched by an equal amount from each winner?s university.

Yu, an ISR-affiliated faculty member, received her Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the Clark School in 2002. She was an ISR postdoctoral researcher in 2003-2004, working with Professor John Baras and ISR-affiliated faculty member Mikhail Vorontsov (ARL) in the Intelligent Optics Laboratory. Along with Professor Balakumar Balachandran (ME) and graduate student Moustafa Al-Bassyiouni, Yu received the University of Maryland's 2003 "Invention of the Year" award in physical sciences for developing a new fiber optic sensor system for acoustic, pressure and acceleration measurements of vibration.

Her research interests include optical sensors, sensor mechanics and material behavior at multiple spatial scales.
