Professor John Baras (ECE/ISR) and his co-authors, ISR Assistant Research Scientist Vahid Tabatabaee, ECE graduate student George Papageorgiou, and alumnus Nicolas Rentz (ECE M.S. 2007), received the Best Paper Award for Wireless Networks at the 2008 IEEE GLOBECOM Conference, held in New Orleans, Nov. 30 to Dec. 4, 2008. The three co-authors are all former or current advisees of Dr. Baras.

The paper, "Performance Metric Sensitivity Computation for Optimization and Trade-off Analysis in Wireless Networks," introduces new methods combining reduced loss network models for wireless MAC interference combined with automatic differentiation to design multi-hop wireless networks that meet performance specifications. GLOBECOM is the premier telecommunications event for industry professionals and academics from companies, governmental Aaencies, and universities around the world. More than 1000 papers were presented at GLOBECOM this year.
