Former ECE Ph.D. student, Baturalp Buyukates, has been awarded the 2024 Andrea Goldsmith Young Scholars Award from the IEEE Communication Theory Technical Committee (ComSoc). Buyukates earned his Ph.D. in 2021 and is currently a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the University of Southern California.

Presented annually at the IEEE Communication Theory Workshop, the Andrea Goldsmith Young Scholars Award is presented to young scholars who have excelled in the area of communication theory. Buyukates was cited for “contributions to age of information, low-latency communications, distributed computation, and learning.

Receiving the Andrea Goldsmith Young Scholars Award is a great honor and a profound source of motivation as I embark on my career as an assistant professor this fall at the University of Birmingham, United Kingdom,” said Bayukates

The award was presented recently at the IEEE Communication Theory Workshop in Banff, Canada, where Buyukates presented an award talk titled “Foundations of Trustworthy Collaborative Machine Learning”.

Prior to attending UMD, Buyukates received a BS in Electrical and Electronics Engineering. His areas of research include machine learning, distributed computation, wireless communications, networks, and information theory. While at UMD, he was advised by Professor Sennur Ulukus.

“My time at UMD was incredibly rewarding, thanks to the guidance of Professor Sennur Ulukus and the dynamic academic community. I am deeply grateful for the opportunities I had at Maryland to begin contributing to the field of communication theory.”
