A team led by Assistant Professor Gang Qu (ECE/UMIACS) has been awarded a grant by the National Collegiate Inventors and Innovators Alliance (NCIIA) for the development of a new secure e-payment system. The $14,837 grant will provide the team of Dr. Qu, Kun Lin (B.S. in Computer Engineering and Finance, May 2006), and Lin Yuan (Ph.D. in Computer Engineering, May 2006) the support they need to bring this new technology from idea to prototype, and eventually to market. In addition, Monique Anderson of the Office of Research Administration & Advancement (ORAA), ECE Professor Steven Marcus, Assistant Professor of Economics Ginger Jin, and Business Professor of Practice Charles Heller served as co-advisors for this project.

The team's secure e-payment system is based on a technology developed by Kun Lin, Daniel Senai (M.S. in Aerospace Engineering, May 2007), and Ogbonia Orji (B.S. in Electrical Engineering and Management Science/Stats, May 2005). It is equipped with encryption capability for secure online transactions.

Twice each year, the NCIIA awards grants to its member institutions to support and strengthen invention, innovation, and entrepreneurship education through curricular development and the work of advanced research teams. The grants help develop new technologies and engage students in problem-solving endeavors.
