Sagnik Bhattacharya, a Ph.D. student of Professor Prakash Narayan (ECE/ISR), has been named a 2022 Clark School Future Faculty Fellow.

The program is designed to prepare Ph.D. students for careers in academia. It consists of a sequence of three one-credit training seminars, a teaching practicum, and a research mentoring practicum. Fellows learn what to expect from all aspects of being a tenure-track professor, including research, teaching, mentoring students, and more. The program also endeavors to assist in placing selected students in leading institutions where they can have the greatest impact and where they may continue to partner with the Clark School.

Bhattacharya’s doctoral research investigates fundamental problems of spatial sampling, learning, and compression in Markov random fields. He brings together a variety of theoretical tools from information theory, statistical learning theory, probability and random processes, and correlated multiarmed bandits. The theoretical problems Bhattacharya studies have intimate connections to important practical applications that feature a large number of spatially correlated temporal signals of which only a few can be sampled at any time. Applications include neuroscience, the Internet of Things, social networks and environmental monitoring from satellites.
