Dr. Andrea Chronis-Tuscano, professor of psychology at the University of Maryland (UMD), presented the first in a new series of virtual seminars from UMD's Brain and Behavior Initiative (BBI), the QED Talks. Her presentation, "Parenting Through a Pandemic," was co-sponsored by the Chelsea School in Hyattsville, MD, and was received by a mixed audience of participants from the University of Maryland and Chelsea School communities as well as those from the University of Maryland-Baltimore and the Janelia Research Campus in Ashburn, VA.

In her talk, Prof. Chronis-Tuscano offered concrete strategies for managing anxiety and stress of both parents and children. In the question and answer portion of the event, she provided numerous approaches for parents dealing with such difficult issues as how to adapt to new routines, what attitudes to adopt toward screen time, and how best to cope with the loss of end-of-the-year milestone celebrations like graduation. Please see the video below for the full version of Prof. Chronis-Tuscano's presentation.

BBI's QED (Quarantine EDucation) Talks are a "TED"-style seminar series for scholars and non-experts alike. The QED Talks are meant to bring us together during this time when we are separated physically: a series of short, topically-diverse presentations followed by a Q&A, the QED Talks intend to educate through inquiry and endeavor to apply research about the brain and its behavioral outputs to your everyday life. Please join BBI on Mondays at 4:00 p.m. for the QED Talk series!

Next week's presentation features Dr. Edward Bernat, associate professor of psychology, and Dr. Ming Hu, assistant professor of architecture. Their BBI-funded collaboration uses electroencephalography and virtual reality to assess the human brain's responses to green architecture. Together, they seek to quantify the “soft” benefits of building design in order to intervene in the pre-build stage. In February, the Society for Women Engineers magazine profiled the research of Profs. Bernat and Hu.

We hope to see you Monday, May 4, 2020 at 4:00 p.m.!
