Associate Professor Radu Balan has joined ISR as an affiliated faculty member. Balan holds a joint appointment with the Department of Mathematics and the Center for Scientific Computation and Mathematical Modeling (CSCAMM).
Balan's research interests are in: Signal processing: sparse signal estimation, source separation; Applied harmonic analysis: frames, time-frequency/time-scale shift operator algebras, time-scale symbols of bounded operators; Machine learning: data embedding into higher dimensional spaces?support vecotr machines, kernel methods, reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces; and Intelligent systems: sensor fusion and models of human-machine interaction.
He holds a Ph.D. in Applied and Computational Mathematics from Princeton University and joined the University of Maryland in 2007. Prior to this he worked at Siemens Corporate Research, the Institute of Mathematics and Its Applications in Minnesota, and the IBM T.J. Watson Research Center.
